New hire reporting
State and federal law require every employer to report newly hired and rehired employees within 20 days of their start date. New hire reports help locate parents who owe child support and help prevent improper benefit payments.
Report the employee's name, address, Social Security number and date of hire, along with your business name, address and federal employer identification number.
Income withholding for child support
When you receive an Income Withholding for Support order for an employee, you must begin withholding no later than the first pay period that starts 14 days after the order was sent.
- Send payments to the state disbursement unit within 7 business days of payday
- Follow the withholding limits in the order and in federal law
- Tell the child support office when the employee leaves your company
Employers may not discipline, refuse to hire or fire an employee because of an income withholding order.
Medical support orders
A National Medical Support Notice tells you that an employee's child must be enrolled in the employer's health plan, if the plan is available. Forward the notice to your plan administrator within 20 business days.
Unemployment insurance basics
Unemployment insurance is a separate program run by the state's workforce agency, which handles employer tax accounts, wage reports and benefit claims. The department works with that agency to coordinate benefits for families who lose income, and to share new hire information.
Health coverage for your workers
Employees with low wages, or their children, may qualify for Medicaid even when they work full time. Point employees to the benefits page during open enrollment or when hours are reduced.
